ABOUT ME

I'm Charlene Shelmire, a freelance writer and Christian who, without God, would not have the gift to write creative stories or create faith-based videos.
My writing portfolio includes content writing, inspiring essays, and short fiction across various writing forms. I've set out on a journey not only to sharpen my skills, but ultimately to create work that's impactful (provokes thought, raises questions).
Over the years, my desire to create stories grew, and so has my collection. And, it's still growing. As creatives, we are always observing the world around us, analyzing, researching, and collecting data. And, during our daily encounters, the faces and situations we see provide us with a wealth of material for creating our stories.
Why did I decide to create a portfolio of work?
(1) To have a creative outlet.
(2) Showcase my writing clips.
(3) Attract writing clients.
(4) To inspire others.
This portfolio also functions as a resume and as an avenue for expanding my online reach. Furthermore, the collection allows me to share my narratives, and learn, grow, and make connections with other creatives.
~My Humble Beginnings~
Writing Journey
It all began many years ago. My desire to become a creative writer was realized after my English class's short story competition. I was shocked to discover I had won a certificate, and an escorted trip to France. About two years later, I was introduced to Journalistic-style writing while serving a dual role as campus news reporter and information columnist in high school. The same year as I was appointed as editor-in-chief for a quarterly newsletter for a church organization.
While in college, I majored in print journalism, minored in English, and enrolled in broadcasting and photography classes.
My sophomore English professor recognized my advanced writing proficiency, and appointed me as a class tutor to low-performing students. I picked up a fine arts elective and was taught to carefully observe the various styles of artwork we studied. The instructor demonstrated how to analyze art, formulate a subjective opinion, and write an art analysis essay.
Eventually, I began observing and analyzing movie plots, social interactions, and societal issues. As my observational and analytical skills sharpened, I incorporated them into my writing sessions. I crafted my stories from a subjective point of view, placing myself in my characters' shoes.
Eventually, I became interested in other forms of writing: blog posts, copywriting, essays, music, poetry, video scripts, skits, book reviews, and inspirational quotes, and more. I received encouragement and valuable feedback from college professors and writing mentors throughout my writing journey. Their valuable feedback gave me the confidence and motivation to improve my craft.
Short Story Writing Backstory
"There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you." These are the powerful words of world-renowned poet, and memoirist Maya Angelou. This quote resonates with me, as it reflects the untold stories that crowded my mind.
My passion for writing began at the tender age of eight, but my interest in short stories was ignited in my mid-teens.
Unfortunately, my introversion lowered my confidence, and the words never made it to the paper.
Fortunately, I received encouragement from college professors who helped me break out of my "creative shell". That push motivated me and catapulted me to where I am today.

~More About Me~
(Personal)
What Causes Do I Support?
I've always been a protector and defender of others because I hate injustice, and unfair treatment. Therefore, I'm on a mission to amplify the voices of marginalized, disadvantaged groups (i.e., minorities, disabled veterans, and poverty-stricken citizens). To do this, I write informative content across various platforms to advocate for change. I'm passionate about social issues, and I aim to foster understanding and empathy in others, in hopes they'll do the same. My ultimate goal is to address these delicate issues head-on with compassion and authenticity, and to lend my voice to the helpless who lack the strength to speak up for themselves.
A Glimpse Into My Life
Originally from Chicago, I now reside in southeast Louisiana, where I continue to nurture my love for writing. Outside of my writing endeavors, I enjoy binge-watching BookTV and After Words episodes, and journaling. Additionally, I create inspiring faith-based YouTube videos, sell products online, and spending time with my hubby and six spoiled, energetic Comet goldfish. I occasionally contribute to publications on Medium and Quora platforms.
